Plan Your EXIT With Ease
Let's get into the first module. It's time to plan your exit with ease.
In this module, we're going to discuss some of the firsts steps you have to consider when planning a move to the continent.
Jot down these points or download this page:
- Will the country I'm going to require vaccines?
- How many C19 tests will I have to take?
- Do I want to use an Airbnb or a resort?
- Am I going to sell everything or ship a few items?
- Do I need to sell my house before leaving, so that I can collect the money with no issues?
- What kind of bank accounts do I need access to internationally?
- What type of life do I want to live once I'm there
- How will I choose which country to move to?
- Do I need to be aware of backup countries as a digital nomad?
- What is my long-term plan, start a business? Volunteer? Go to school (you need a valid reason to be in another country legally)
- Do I know anyone on the ground, if not how can I start making digital connections?
These are questions you have to answer for yourself. At the end of the day, we're just here to help you make the best decisions on your journey through Africa.
As a suggestion, it's a good idea to sell everything you have and start over. Sometimes shipping is a hassle on the continent, and we've encountered a few horror stories - even down to people going to jail for supposedly having items they shouldn't have. We like to play it safe and avoid shipping things over via shipping container. People at the border also have the power to overcharge you to get your items and give you the entire run around. They know you want your items so they will say anything for extra $$$.
We also suggest booking a hotel or resort unless you know for sure someone booked a specific Airbnb and they liked it. Sometimes here in Africa people will host a house or post pictures and it won't be what you expect. In the bonus guide, we'll show you how to find good houses in Dar es Salaam. If you're outside Tanzania or in another country try to book a resort to be on the safe side or find a highly reviewed Airbnb.
If you're embarking on this journey with the hope of being a nomad (which technically you are since you only have US citizenship) then pay attention to which countries don't require lots of visa fees. There are visa-free countries for US citizens. You may have to leave the country every 90 days so go to a neighboring safe country that won't charge you crazy c19 fees. Here in East Africa, Zambia, Burundi, and Uganda are pretty stress-free.
